MONITORING THE MEDIA LANDSCAPE

There's a whole lot happening on the media landscape in our region and our club is honored to be the professional organization for practitioners of the craft. For 132 years, The Press Club of Cleveland has provided a place for journalists, public relations, corporate communications, marketing and advertising professionals to gather and exchange ideas.

We make it our mission to stay on top of stories that affect our members. A free press is vital to our democracy, and local journalism is especially important in that equation. We're intrigued by Cleveland.com's new hyperlocal approach to covering the news via Project Text, and we're inspired that Google and McClatchy are committed to sharing Youngstown's important stories—and creating new jobs—in the wake of The Vindicator's closing through The Compass Experiment.

The Press Club of Cleveland continues to promote excellence in journalism, educate future journalists and maintain the rich history of journalism in Cleveland. Provocative and informative programming is scheduled throughout the year with discounts offered to Press Club members. We hope that you'll connect with us through our social media channels, be our guest at upcoming events, and let us know what stories matter most to you.

We mourn the passing of two iconic Cleveland journalists, both of whom died in July. Fred Griffith, 90, was a Press Club of Cleveland Hall of Fame inductee who made an indelible mark on Cleveland television with his long career, becoming a household name with The Morning Exchange. Read more about Fred's phenomenal life and career here. Jeff Maynor, 75, was a fixture in Cleveland television news, having worked at Channels 3, 5, and 8 during his 40 years on the air. Learn more here. The Press Club of Cleveland sends our condolences to Fred's and Jeff's family and friends.

Big Night for Buckeye State Journalists
A sold-out crowd took over the House of Blues in downtown Cleveland for the 2019 All-Ohio Excellence in Journalism Awards presented by The Press Club of Cleveland on June 7. The program paid tribute to journalists from around the state, honoring outstanding work in print, radio, television, and digital media.

This year, we received 801 entries from all corners of the state, which were judged by members of the Press Clubs of Florida, Idaho, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Orange County, San Diego, San Francisco, Southeast Texas, Syracuse, and Western Pennsylvania. The assessments and analysis of submitted materials are completed entirely independently of the Press Club of Cleveland, ensuring impartiality and objectivity.

Press Club board members took turns behind the mic on the House of Blues stage, celebrating and calling attention to the winning work of our journalism colleagues. Special thanks to program chair Lee Moran of The News-Herald, and to 2019 Press Club corporate sponsor FirstEnergy.

Promoting Your All-Ohio Excellence in Journalism Honors

All media outlets and individuals who won awards in this year’s Ohio Excellence in Journalism program will receive a digital version of a badge to promote the accomplishment. The badges may be used by all award winners between now and June 2020 in print, on websites and social media, in chyrons, on letterhead and resumes, and anywhere else it would be of value.

One version of the badge is for honorees in the “Best of Ohio” categories, and a second provides space to typeset the name of a specific award. The badges were scheduled to be distributed by June 21 via email to those who managed the submission of any award-winning entry.

Look for the badges to show up in your favorite media across Ohio. If you won an award and don’t receive your badge via email by June 21, check with the individual who managed entries for your organization, or write to us directly at pressclubcle@gmail.com.

Did You Know?

  • Global press freedom declined to its lowest point in 13 years in 2016 amid unprecedented threats to journalists and media outlets in major democracies and new moves by authoritarian states to control the media, including beyond their borders.

  • Only 13 percent of the world’s population enjoys a Free press—that is, a media environment where coverage of political news is robust, the safety of journalists is guaranteed, state intrusion in media affairs is minimal, and the press is not subject to onerous legal or economic pressures.
