Hello friends,
What
a pleasure it is to start my tenure as president of the Press Club of
Cleveland with considerable momentum coming out of 2022. We had the
opportunity to celebrate Denise Polverine’s stewardship of the club
during our annual meeting/holiday party in December. Denise was a steady
hand during the tumultuous COVID years that kept us from meeting in
person. We will remain forever grateful for all she did during the most
challenging of times.
I’m
honored to carry on the traditions of this venerable organization,
which has been around for 136 years now, and has seen its share of
historic events (including not one, but TWO global pandemics!) Over its
long history, the Press Club of Cleveland has changed with the times,
much like journalism itself.
My
goal in 2023 is to build on last year’s energy and to undertake a
strategic planning process to ensure the Press Club’s work and legacy
continues for decades to come. I’m excited to work on this important
project with the board, which includes six new members:
- Ron Calhoun, Publisher/Executive Director, The Cleveland Observer
- Andy Fishman, Vice President/News Director, WJW TV
- Joe Kubic, CEO, The Adcom Group
- Lila Mills, Editor-in-Chief, Signal Cleveland
- Mark Puente, Investigative Reporter, Cleveland Marshall Project
- Janus Small, CEO, Janus Small Associates
The
Press Club is, and has been since its 1887 founding, about the people
it represents. And it’s not just journalists. The Press Club has a wide
umbrella that covers all types of communications professionals and
includes those who care about the public’s right to access information.
We applaud you for supporting the Press Club and urge you to invite
others to become a member today. More importantly, get involved with the
club, join a committee and attend our programming and events. I promise
you’ll learn something, meet friends old and new and experience pride
in all that journalism has to offer our community. Please reach out with
any questions or to get involved by emailing pressclubcle@gmail.com
I’m looking forward to working with you to make the Press Club of Cleveland the best it can be.
Warmly,
Elizabeth
