PASSING THE TORCH - PRESIDENT'S FAREWELL MESSAGE

It has been an honor to serve as president of The Press Club of Cleveland the past two years. As we all know, the last couple of years weren’t easy for any of us personally or professionally. Our world went through unimaginable times, and all the while journalists and communicators covered every development, keeping all of us informed. I have never been prouder of The Press Club. Strong, local journalism was essential, and our club was able to support and promote it and its practitioners. We kept programming going, found new ways to engage with our membership, formed new relationships, and expanded our reach on social with important conversations in our industry and beyond. This past summer, the club resumed in-person events and meetings and it felt so great to see everyone. The future looks bright for The Press Club. We have a deep, historic past coupled with so much strength and creativity among our membership and board members. We have a lot to build on. The Press Club is welcoming several new, top-notch board members and we already have some terrific programming lined up for 2023. I am most excited to stay involved on the board and serve under the leadership of incoming president, Elizabeth McIntyre. I have worked with Elizabeth for most of my career. First, when I was at cleveland.com and she was at The Plain Dealer. And now, while our careers have taken us to Cleveland Magazine and Crain’s Cleveland respectively, we have worked closely together in our board roles to hopefully help makes things better. Elizabeth is a bright light, brilliant, and quick-witted. You are in great hands, Press Club members. I look forward to leading the events committee, so please give me your ideas on what types of events and activities you’d like to see. And please, support local journalism and renew or join The Press Club of Cleveland and encourage your colleagues to do the same.

Gratefully,

Denise Polverine

HALL OF FAME/HEATON AWARDS PROGRAM RESUMES

AFTER PANDEMIC PAUSE

Cabot, Jackson, O'Bryan join HOF, Heaton Award goes to Robins

Three journalists – Mary Kay Cabot, Rick Jackson and Jim O’Bryan – are the newest members of the Press Club of Cleveland Journalism Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame class of 2022 was inducted on Nov. 16 during a lunch program at the City Club of Cleveland.

In addition, Monica Robins was honored as the 2022 recipient of the Chuck Heaton Award, a prestigious honor presented by the Press Club to the print, radio, online or television journalist who best exemplifies the sensitivity and humility exhibited by Chuck Heaton during his 50-year career as a sportswriter at The Plain Dealer.

Cabot is a sportswriter, Browns beat reporter and podcast host for The Plain Dealer/cleveland.com, as well as a radio/TV Browns analyst and a selector for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Jackson is a host and anchor for Ideastream Public Media. He has been a radio and TV reporter/anchor and is a member of the Ohio Broadcasting Hall of Fame.

O’Bryan is founder of The Lakewood Observer, an award-winning photographer and designer and an entrepreneur.

Robins, the award-winning senior health correspondent at WKYC TV 3, is also a community activist, a volunteer and singer/musician.

Press Club President Denise Polverine Manoloff, publisher of Cleveland Magazine, presented the Hall of Fame plaques. Each inductee delivered emotional remarks about how honored they were to be included as members of the Hall of Fame. Click herefor more on the Hall of Fame/Heaton Award event.

The Heaton Award was presented by John Betchkal, a longtime member of the Press Club Board of Directors, and a friend of the late Chuck Heaton. Betchkal launched the award in 2008, the year Heaton died at age 90. He recalled Heaton’s humility and his willingness to help others as well as his journalistic talent. Heaton was inducted into the Press Club Journalism Hall of Fame in 1992.

Previous Heaton Award recipients are Terry Pluto, 2008; John Telich, 2009; Margaret Bernstein, 2010; Herb Thomas, 2011; Jack Marschall, 2012; Jim McIntyre, 2013; Wayne Dawson, 2014; Betsy Kling, 2015; Danita Harris, 2016; Tom Moore, 2017; Leon Bibb, 2018; and Mark “Munch” Bishop, 2019.

A Special Recognition Award was presented to the family of the late Michael Heaton, Chuck Heaton’s son. Michael Heaton, a longtime journalist, most recently was a Plain Dealer columnist and “minister of culture” for the PD. He died on Sept. 18 at age 66.

A graduate Kent State University, Michael Heaton wrote for the San Francisco Examiner and People magazine before returning to Northeast Ohio in 1987 to join his father at The Plain Dealer. In addition to his column, Michael Heaton reviewed concerts, movies and TV and books, wrote in-depth profiles for the Sunday Magazine, published two books and co-authored several others.

Actress Patricia Heaton, Chuck’s daughter and Michael’s sister, recorded a short video that was played during the program.

The Hall of Fame/Heaton Award program, which previously was a dinner event, paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. It resumed this year as a lunch program.
